Power Cords

Do any other brands besides Forest River have the detachable shore power cords? When we first looked at our Roo I though I wouldn't like the cord when compared to the permanently attached ones on our old Starcraft Travel Star and Palomino pop-up. Now I think I prefer the detachable cord. I'm in Law Enforcement in the Twin Cities Metro area and we've had a rash of power cords thefts from RV dealer lots and from several private residences. Apparently there is a lot of copper in the cord for metal scrap thieves. One dealer showed up on a Monday morning and found 35 of his cords had been cut off his campers. If this catches on the detachable cord may prove to be more valuable.

RE: What to Do About Going to Florida and Winterizing!!!!

I've been thinking about a related concern regarding pulling a camper south in the winter from the Midwest. Would I be doing a lot of damage in exposing the trailer to the road salt and grime before I escaped the winter climate and got south? The reason I bring this up is I noticed corrosion to our weight distributing bar chains and our storage bin locks just by towing our unit home in the winter from the dealer in March during a light snow. I know the dealer had also towed it to the RV show in a snow storm. I also suppose the unit may have been delivered during the winter and been exposed then. I do realize that my fine State of Minnesota uses a bit more road salt than other states. Maybe that is a factor.

RE: Help....Roo/Shamrock 233 vs Jayco 232

Three queen beds was important to us. Only Forest River had those when compared to Jayco and Starcraft. Why would you want only two twins and a queen (Jayco) or two queens and a twin (Starcraft)? The Forest River/Roo bunks also had more head room when opened up. The mattress heaters are icing on the cake! The A/C analogy is pretty accurate. But a big plus to the Forest River's ducted A/C is the ability to add a digital thermostat to it. Can't do that with blasted A/C. It keeps a more comfortable and accurate temperature. And you can choose between keeping the fan always running or having it turn off with the A/C. I was surprised how much this means to us now because I didn't pay much attention to it originally. We love our Forest River Roo 233.

Rust on bunk corners

I've got some minor rust on the inside of the upper corners of all my bunk corners on our 2008 ROO 233. If the bunks are extended you would be looking at these now outer corners before securing the canvas. Anyone know if this is normal? Oddly enough I think the minor rust has been there since day one. It's barely visibly in the gap between the protective edging on the corner. It's my only real concern for our unit as I start to contemplate winter storage after our last two upcoming trips. I'm contemplating having it looked it by the dealer before storage since our original warranty expires in March. On a side note does anyone know if the optional 2nd year warranty is as inclusive in coverage for something like this as the 1st year is? We did pay the $150 for the 2nd year. Thanks for any insights. It's been a fantastic year of camping.

RE: Camping nights per year

We're at 19 nights with a 4 night trip coming up for the Labor Day weekend. We're looking at probably 4 more nights in September and October. For us, a minimum of 16-20 nights makes it worthwhile. I agree counting the nights may be silly but I would feel a bit guilty in purchasing the camper if we didn't really use it. I have seen some people jump into a camper and then only use it once or twice a year.

Supplementing water hook-up with water pump

We just got back from Palmer's Gulch Resort/KOA in the Black Hills and had a great time. We had a site up in the pine tress on the hill and one of the few problems we had was low water pressure (the other were loud neighbors our last last two nights with lack of "quiet time" enforcement). When we do return in a few years to the Black Hills our kids will be older and I can see us staying somewhere a bit more rustic. I ran our water pump with a full water tank while keeping our water line hooked up to compensate for the low water pressure at times. My questions is does this damage the pump or plumbing at all? The pressure definitely went up. How does the plumbing work if both a water hook-up and the pump are used at the same time?

RE: We got our new toy

Congrats on your new Roo! We've had ours since February and we love it. It's definitely the nicest and highest quality camper we've had so far in comparison to our previous Palomino pop-up and Travel Star hybrid.

RE: Hunter Thermostat Problem

My A/C had worked fine before the install. I was surprised at how warm the back of the Hunter unit felt when I felt around during the high readings. The hole for the thermostat wires in the wall next to the frig is about the size of a nickel. Is it possible that warm air from around the frig is being drawn up and out the hole to the back of the thermostat, giving the false readings? I'd be the first to say I may have messed up on the wiring hook-ups but I don't see how that would give false high thermostat readings. I've done battery replacements with no change.

RE: Hunter Thermostat Problem

I had posted the same problem a month or so back. Here's a link: http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/21540027.cfm. I still haven't figured it out. I thought it was the fantastic fan in the bathroom vent that was causing the higher temp reading but it did it on our last trip when the fan was off. I too noticed some heat behind the unit. I wonder if heat is being drawn from the refrigerator through the wiring hole behind the thermostat?

Roo Owners-Bathroom towel rack and TP holder question

We're finally getting around to hanging our towel rack and TP holder that came with the camper (4 trips and 8 nights later) before we head out on our long trip to the Black Hills. I've seen photos on here of one of you hanging your towel bars (his and hers) to the right of the toilet on the wall. Did you use anchors in the wall? Whole wall seems hollow except for maybe one stud/support. Any suggestions? Putting the TP holder inside the bathroom lower cabinet door seems to make since. I'm assuming the cabinet door is thick enough for the screws that come with the holder. On a sidenote, we had our first problem with the new 233 on our last trip. The mounting bracket for the grill and shelf on the camper exterior under the awning came loose from the camper and everything fell to the ground. Luckily we weren't grilling at the time! I was surprised how short the screws were that Forest River used to mount the bracket on the camper. We're picking it up from the dealer tonight after the warranty repair. Hopefully they used longer screws this time around. We love the Roo. Thanks for your help.

RE: Towing w/ SUV

We tow with the same vehicle, a 2004 Sequoia, and a similar sized hybrid, the Roo 233. The Travel Star 21SB and Roo 233 are about the same weight. We have both WD and sway control and it tows like a dream. Nothing expensive or fancy, just the Pro Series WD and a Reese sway control. Unless your dealer sold you the Equalizer, I wouldn't count on their statement that WD alone will handle the sway. Get the sway control also. It makes a big difference in windy conditions and on the interstate. I never disconnect my WD and sway control when backing into sites. I don't understand why others say this is necessary. I do loosen up the sway when I stop to check-in at the campground but I don't know why you would have to remove any of it.

RE: Extended Warranties

Thank you guys for your input. I feel better now going with my gut instinct of passing on the extended warranty. Once again RV.NET proves invaluable. We're packed up and taking off for our 4th trip of the 2008 season. Forecast looks a little wet and cool but with the camper it's not a big deal.

Extended Warranties

Looking for some input on purchasing an extended warranty for our new 2008 Roo 233. We have a 2 year warranty through the manufacturer. We now have to decide between purchasing additional coverage of 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8 years. Any opinions? I'm thinking we'll have the camper for at least 4-5 years and it very well could be ours for longer since we are very happy with it and it seems to fill all our needs. What has everyone else done?

RE: why Equal-I-zer WDH?

Pro Series WD was about $125. Reese sway control was free with the trailer. I'm seeing a savings of over 50%. If I was starting from scratch with nothing I might consider spending the money on the Equalizer. My hook up is easy. I do untighten the sway control when I check-in at the campground office so backing into a site is not a problem. I don't remove the sway control, just loosen it up.

RE: why Equal-I-zer WDH?

I will admit I have never had the Equalizer set up. But it does seem to get a bit over-hyped. When we bought our new Roo I asked our dealer about the Equalizer which he happens to sells. While being a great product, he portrayed it as being a bit over-priced. Our Pro-Series weight distribution and Reese sway control are simple to use and were much less expensive. I've towed in some horrible winds this spring and the whole set up towed like a dream.

RE: starcraft antigua - bed clips falling out

I'm wondering if you mean the knobs aroud the outside exterior edge of the bunks that the elastic band from the bunk canvas loops around on the pre-2008 Starcrafts? We had them on our 2005 18SB and they were prone to breaking if the support poles came near them.

RE: Is anyone towing their Hybrid with a Tacoma / midsize truck?

I tow with a 2004 Sequoia which is the SUV-equivalent of the Tundra. It does a fantastic job towing our ROO 233 which has a dry weight of around 3900 pounds. I couldn't imagine going smaller than the Sequoia/Tundra, though. For a V-8 engine, the Sequoia/Tundra gets pretty fair gas mileage when not towing. I get around 17-21 mpg on the highway. When towing I can get 11-12 mpg if I stay under 65 mph.

RE: Hunter Digital Thermostat issue

CSP has it right, it's to the left and around the corner from the refrigerator if your facing the frig. In Chuck's photo, it'd be around the corner to the right from the frig.

Hunter Digital Thermostat issue

I put the basic Hunter digital thermostat in our 233 Roo and I am happy with it compared to the analog unit that came with the camper. I have noticed, though, problems with the thermostat keeping an accurate temperature. It seems to occur when we are using the bathroom "Fantastic Fan" and have the front roof vent cracked for ventilation. Anyone else experience this? Is the airflow caused by the fan affecting the theromstat? On some cool mornings, the thermostat reads much lower than is accurate. In the afternoons when it was warmer and we turned the A/C on, the thermostat read a higher temperature than was accurate. That seems to make since with the fan/ventilation affecting the theromstat, right? What does everyone else do in similar circumstances, then? Close the vents for accurate readings? We're having a ton of fun in our new Roo. Three trips already with 5-6 more planned including the Black Hills/Mt Rushmore in July.

Here's our new Roo 233 on our first trip of 2008 to Lanesboro, MN. We had a great time and love the new camper. http://thumb2.webshots.net/t/66/666/1/99/31/2416199310103567742KxjiMY_th.jpg
